It’s Columbus Day once again, and this year feels a little different. As the holiday regains traction as a federal holiday across much of the country, Bergen County residents may be wondering: Are schools open? Is the mail running? What’s changed since last year?

A Federal Holiday Returns

Columbus Day, officially recognized on the second Monday in October, is once again being observed as a federal holiday, meaning banks, post offices, and most government buildings will be closed on Monday, October 14. Federal employees will have the day off, and mail delivery will pause until Tuesday.

However, local observance varies especially here in New Jersey, where many communities also honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the same date. Some school districts choose to remain open and use the day for education and reflection, while others are closed to observe the holiday.

Are Bergen County Schools Open?

It depends on your town. In Bergen County, some districts such as Ridgewood and Tenafly have opted to stay open and continue normal instruction, while others, including Paramus and Hackensack, close for the day. It’s always best to check your district’s official calendar before making plans.

What’s Open and Closed

  • Post Offices & Federal Buildings: Closed

  • Banks: Closed (some online services still available)

  • State and Local Offices: Many closed, check your town website for updates

  • NJ Transit: Operating on a regular weekday schedule

  • Retail Stores & Malls: Open — expect plenty of Columbus Day weekend sales at Garden State Plaza and other shopping hubs

  • Restaurants & Coffee Shops: Most open, though hours may vary

How Bergen is Marking the Day

Around the county, several towns are holding small ceremonies and parades celebrating both Italian-American heritage and Indigenous culture. Events in places like Fort Lee and Fair Lawn are highlighting local history and community togetherness — the spirit of what makes Bergen County special.

Many families are also taking advantage of the long weekend to enjoy the crisp fall weather, apple picking, and Bergen’s best brunch spots before the chill sets in.
